Monongahela Cemetery was the first in the nation to be placed on the National Register for Historic Places due to its architecture and landscape design. It's not hard to see why; the cemetery is quite wooded (which is rare) but the stone chapel is aesthetically pleasing. A particular thing I found is that there are grave markers for IOOF members which I had not seen before. I also found a grave marker devoted to serving in Cuba during the Spanish - American War.
Quite tranquil and peaceful.
Beautiful, serene and historic. This wooded cemetery gives you a sense of peace and tranquility. The grounds are expertly cared for year round. You should not pass up an opportunity to visit this historic landmark.

Resting place of Dr. David Reese Jones an Army doctor who served in the United States Army during World War 1.
So it's hard to get excited about a cemetery right but this was a pleasant discovery. Who would have thought that this gem was tucked up in Monongahela? Want to see old headstones? Check. Want to see Civil War headstones and history? Check. Want to see all nationalities represented? Check. Want a chapel? Check. Want a brand new, modern area? Check. All within a park like setting.
