I went to Texas for my first Redfish trip with Captain Matt in the fall. Unsure of my ability on salt water fly fishing (my background is in freshwater fly fishing) we booked a 3 day trip to fish with him. He met us right on time, his boat and gear was immaculate. He had us on fish giving us gentle pointers without stress or pressure quickly. His useful instruction and lots of knowledge with a palpable passion for the fishery immediately put us at ease. His ability to communicate what needed to be done, where the fly needed to be, casting pointers, how to strip etc. while not creating any stress made for a dream days of fishing and on the first day both of us in my group had our first Redfish on a fly and a few more. By the end of the trip my ability to cast the heavier fly rods and flies, into winds, make more challenging and longer casts were night and day. But overall I didn’t even realize I had learned as much as I did because of his calm, knowledgeable and supportive demeanor on the boat. After our 3 days with him of fishing, and numerous fish, good times and laughs we couldn’t wait to come back. So much so we ended up booking another 8 day trip 4 months later with him. His ability to communicate with everyone from novice to the most seasoned angler in an articulate, respectful and knowledgeable way makes him the best guide I’ve ever been on a boat with. We’re already trying to book our 3rd trip back to fish with him and I can guarantee that’s just the start of trips with Captain Matt in Rockport.

Have known and fished with Matt for many years. As a guide he has the most desired qualities of experience and patience and can always put you on fish. Recently went with my daughter on a full day trip and Matt was able to help my daughter catch her first redfish on a fly. If you want the Texas redfish experience Matt is an excellent choice. As an experienced fisherman he has my highest recommendation.

Matt is a great guide! I fished with him in December and had a really fun trip. We caught some nice redfish on the fly and had tons of action. Matt is a lot of fun to be in the boat with. It was definitely one of the most fun saltwater fly fishing experiences that I have had!

I recently spent 2 days fishing with Matt and cannot wait to come back. Understanding the sun, wind, and tides, he knows where the fish are and worked hard to put me in position to make a good presentation. He was patient with my errant casts and was great at giving me tips to ensure we had a successful outing!

I came down from Montana for a few days of fly fishing with Matt. This was my first time fishing Texas and I was really impressed. The water was clear and the Redfish were plentiful. We had a couple beautiful days and Matt had me on fish the whole time. A day on the bow of his boat is fun and easy-going; Matt was friendly and positive, and kept it light while working hard to get me shots at fish. I had a blast and can’t wait to do it again!
