Great place to worship. I've been attending since 2004. I know many have pegged SDA churches as "cults" because of their experiences. Although I've experienced some of the same weird instances at some churches, that's not the case for many SDA churches today.

Every denomination has its doctrines and list of what is acceptable for their members. Many are man made ideals of what we should do as a member of a particular denomination based on human beliefs and interpretations and some are directly and unmistakably from the Bible. The former is devisive policies; the latter is Holy Spirit led.

Having grown up in the SDA church in N.O., the services were focused on condemning and convicting because of what we wore, the type of Gospel music our youth choir sung, where we went, or what we ate...not much about the love of God. One sermon I remember vividly was regarding veganism and why we shouldn't eat mayonnaise (my visitor this day named us a cult after arttending)!! Another visitor experienced 2 women physically removing her jewelry and wiping her makeup off her face before she walked into the sanctuary. In this same city, a pastor's sermon focused on sleeveless dresses and jewelry and why both were not Christian apparel (of course, my sister had invited someone who had on a sleeveless dress and jewelry who sank in her seat then left the service early because she was embarrassed). This was pretty common in the 80s-90s in my church. Needless to say, those people did not return to church and refused to hear anything the SDA church believed. This was Pharisaical, not Christ-like nor intended by God.

Teaching should come directly from the Word of God without deviation and without condemnation for what we as humans see as "wrong." I believe we are to show Christ to those who are hurting and lost and the Holy Spirit convicts and causes people to discern how to live lives that are pleasing to God. That's His job...not ours nor does He need our input or assistance with doing His job. We are told to meet the needs of those who are lost. They will show interest in learning more about the Lord if we don't condemn based on our beliefs, but show love instead. This is effective Christianity and is the way God intends for His work to be done. Anything outside of these confines pushes people away from the Lord instead of closer to Him. This defeats the purpose and is a turn off for many. I say let's focus on what we do as Christians. We should not be known for what we don't do (Pharisaical in nature), but what we do for our neighbors, friends, and strangers (as did Jesus Christ)...and God will handle the changing the hearts of man where He sees the change is needed...not where we think it is warranted.

Unlike many SDA churches I've attended in the past, I feel more comfortable bringing visitors to Richardson SDA. I do try to avoid the "don't wear this, don't eat that" sermons when bringing visitors, but have witnessed few instances of that at Richardson. The pastoral team at Richardson backs teaching with Bible searching and studying during services, which gives those who may not be familiar with the Bible a chance to learn how to navigate it.l without feeling less than. The church is focused less on the popular "prosperity" preaching that is common today and more on Bible truths that are relevant for our time and thus gives us strength in these difficult days. The church is focused on bringing people to God, which is our primary duty as Christians.

There are two services, one for the early morning risers, like myself, and one for the traditional 11am crew. The class study is very in depth and most people get involved in the class study conversation. I learn something each week. The people are welcoming and caring. Most of all, they embrace and focus on relationships with Jesus, not what you need to do before coming to the Lord. Give it a try. Come and experience Richardson. You may be pleasantly surprised!!
