At the end of a quintessential main street of crowded trees and Victorian homes that ushers you through the quaint, quiet ocean town of Wachepeague, stands the Island House. Perched above the boardwalks leading to the waterways and docks, the restaurant overlooks expansive salt-water marshes extending out to the barrier islands of the Atlantic Ocean. Seating is available outdoors or inside the air conditioned building. Large windows offer excellent views. Seafood is obviously the specialty. We love our big "small" bowl of crab bisque for starter. Oh, I almost forgot about the sweet potato biscuits before that. They we're yummmy! We decided to share an order of lightly breaded, fried popcorn shrimp with green beans w garlic and roasted redskins potatoes. We were pleasantly surprised when two plates were brought out with nearly full amounts for each of us. The shrimp was fresh and tasted delicious, especially when dipped into the sirracha seasoned "tartar" sauce. The beans were very tasty, lighted seasoned w garlic and cooked to firmness. Our waiter was a very nice young man who helped made our dinner very nice.
We stopped in for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon and were sat at a bay view window (which was lovely). We both started with the Crab Soup (which was creamy, delicious and had several bits of crab in it - pictured). We each had the Fried Seafood Combo, which came with one Fried Flounder, one Fried Crab Cake, 3 Fried Shrimp and 3 Fried Oysters with a side of Onion Rings (pictured). The oysters were plump and juicy and the three shrimp were a good size also. There was plenty of food on the combo, but we did not feel like it was worth the $43 price tag. We came too early to try their famous sweet potato biscuits (as they said they started making those for dinner, starting around 4 pm).
I love this place. It is my favorite restaurant on the Eastern Shore. I try to sit outside so I can take in the smells and sights of this portion of the Eastern Shore. I recommend everything on the menu, but especially the seafood. The sweet potato biscuits are unique and great. This is an awesome bar if you are staying in the town. Definitely a spot to visit when you come here.
We chose Island House as our one seafood splurge night during our weekend eastern shore adventure and we were not disappointed. The crab cakes were delicious, made better by the fact you are surrounded by a marina and the water. Service was excellent and you get a local feel from the atmosphere. I definitely recommend visiting while in the area.
We have eaten here on multiple occasions. The food and staff are always first rate. The restaurant is clean and has wonderful views. They have great specials and fresh food. Ifo you are in the area definitely give them a try.
