Anytime we get near DC (even if near is 2-3 hours out of the way) we come here. Get the steak and have a crab cake, I have never had better anywhere. Creme brulee to finish it off.
Adding to this.
We live 6 hours away, it's my wife's birthday, "what do you want for your birthday meal" ..answer the best most consistent steak you will ever have. Gas up the car and make the drive, worth every bit of it!!
Just returned to J. Gilbert’s for lunch after a hiatus of many years and was very pleasantly surprised. Despite the older atmosphere (dark, sequestered), the restaurant is spacious and comfortable. Service is excellent.
Lunch sandwiches are superior — a perfect balance between fillings, topping and bread add up to an outstanding dining experience. We tremendously enjoyed the Reuben (the best we’ve had recently, delis included) and the French dip.
Some say that sandwich making is an art, and J.Gilbert’s proves the adage. This establishment appears to have carefully developed its sandwich recipes and prepares them with distinction.
Amazing! Food was delicious and service outstanding. The cinnamon donuts with caramel apple dipping sauce were so good we had to order a second. Eggs Benedict, carrot cake waffles - everything was great! Our server, Hugo, was fantastic! He went out of his way to welcome us and make sure our experience exceeded all expectations! The portions were perfect size and on top of it all - the bill was shockingly reasonable! Definitely recommend!
Had an excellent Porterhouse steak that was a special that Thursday night. Asked for medium rare and it was perfect, served hot right off the fire. My only complaint was the tiny little salt and pepper shakers. I prefer my steak boldly flavored with course salt and fresh ground course peppercorns. That said, we had an excellent meal with lots of fresh baked bread and flavored butter. The baked potato was perfectly cooked and served hot with butter, sour cream and chives.. We will definitely come back here when we are in town.
I normally don’t leave reviews, but I had to this time. For the past two years, almost every restaurant we go to, we deal with terrible service. Tonight was a wonderful surprise. The staff was amazing. Graham, our server, was attentive, helpful, and hilarious. Chris, I believe the manager, who quickly set the table up for us was very welcoming. The food was perfectly portioned and cooked just right. This was my first time there and definitely won’t be my last. Such a great experience.
