Some early steep inclines with fairly good solitude. Leads to a meadow with not much of a view, but darn do you feel accomplished afterwards. Pass by some small streams with a little bit of "up" leading to the shelter. All in all, quite a lovely hike with some challenges. If you're training for Mount Olympus in Greece, this seems like a pretty great training ground!
I hiked this section of the AT on an unusually warm February from the AT Parking Area off Tucker Lane to the Jim and Molly Denton Shelter (and back). Total mileage was roughly 6.6 miles. The first 1.5 miles up to the grassy fields is moderately strenuous. It was pretty interesting walking over the train tracks to continue up the AT. The view of the fields are breathtaking! HikingUpward described that section of the trail walking through a place out of a Tolkien novel and the description couldn't be more accurate. The trail continues to wind through the grassy area and descents down to 638. We walked south on 638 for about 0.05 miles to reconnect with the AT on the right side. It is fun to finagle your way to the shelter area (also moderately challenging).
