The trail was tranquil and almost entirely shaded (which is perfect in the summer). Very educational civil war markers. There are some steep areas but there are also accessible paths. I used my Alltrails app to use as a map to keep my bearings, but maybe that's just me and my inherent lack of sense of direction. I will be returning!
Fun historical walk with paths that follow the Confederate and Union battle lines and telling the story leading up to the time of the Appomattox courthouse surrender. Trail is fairly open with some steep sections here and there and benches along the way if needed. A few more "unmarked paths that may have been original foot trails if you tend to be more adventurous or just want to add more mileage on your trip.
Nice shaded trails. Hill down to river from grey trail marker nine is steep but doable with a 9 and 11 year old. Watch the poison ivy though.
Beautiful park with really nice trails. It's easy to miss so make sure you look out for the signage on the right of the road. It's a gravel road so there are holes, but it's not bad. The parking area is actually pretty spacious and there are picnic tables and a porta potty set up for your convenience. The are two trails, a gray and blue one, I think. To get down to the river you have to take the gray trail down. That trail can get very steep at times, so I don't recommend strollers. The trails can easily get you 5 miles if you take all of them. There are also several benches set up along the way, which is also nice. Overall, really nice place to get out and stretch your legs.
The North Anna Battlefield is another great stop along the Virginia Civil War Trails. With several miles of trails, information plaques, and a nice picnic area. I highly recommend stopping. Only downfall is the porta john situation.
