I visited here in October 2021. This place is a nice little spot to learn more Pre-Columbian and colonial-era Virginian Indian society. Lots of awesome artifacts. Very clean and the staff were great. If you like Native culture, I would easily recommend this place.
Great place to see how pre industrial humans lived. Europeans first invaded these lands four hundred years ago.
Located roughly an hour from the West End of Richmond. The drive there is gorgeous. The museum is a great with lots of pictures, pottery and information packed exhibits. The tour guide, Ethan, was great at talking with kids (aged 4-10) and adults. He was well informed and presented material in an in interesting way. We picnicked on the lawn afterwards and had a blast.
I learned a lot! I loved learning the history, art, physics, culture and geography! It was terrific seeing the scientific tests and recreations of ancient ways of doing things. Interesting to see the first hand historical accounts and drawings from the 1600s. The stone cutting display was super interesting and educational. Some of the signs in the display could be refreshed but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
The gift shop was very reasonably priced and had an interesting variety of local crafts.
The place is small so if you are a walk and browse person, it would be a quick visit. If you are a read and examine person you could spend a few hours.
The original schoolhouse is next door, you can walk around it.
Free easy parking. Call before going to confirm they will be open.
This is a great little museum. Lots of history and information. Nice gift shop.
