Phenomenal trail with awesome challenges in rock scrambling not to mention gorgeous views. Prepare to arrive early and expect a crowded parking lot. This is considered the best home in the region and draws tourists and avid hikers from all over
Wonderful Hike and is really similar or even harder than Angels landing in Zion National park (if you are aware of it)..O won't recommend jt for beginners...
Awesome hike. Great views. We started in fog and mist, but climbed up above the clouds. Definitely a must do if you’re in Virginia. Fun scramble at the top. It may be difficult for children or shorter adults, there are a couple of big steps to take. Bring plenty of water, it’s a long hike. It took us just over 5 hours from the parking lot and back. We went on a week day in early October, arrived around 11am and there was plenty of parking. Hiking boots are highly recommended - most of the trail is uneven rock so you’ll want the extra support for your ankles, and there are a few steep rock faces where you’ll appreciate the extra grip (especially if the rock happens to be wet). It’s a busy trail but since it’s a loop you may not see too many people. Close to the top we met a few who decided not to do the scramble and were coming back down. If you’re that close to the summit I highly recommend doing the scramble and completing the loop down the fire road - both for the satisfaction and the views, but also because the trail is a much easier descent.
A great hike really worth it, with a great view! It absolutely meets the hard rating it has though. It's a steep hike at the beginning and good rock scrambel near the top and a very long down hill coming back. Almost walked rite in to a deer and her fawn which was cool. Also ran in to a bear cub, I didn't notice it until I was just passing it on the trail and it moved and heard the leaves move, so I took a step closer because I thought it was a black dog, but then it looked up maybe 6-7 feet away and I could tell it was a bear. So I got a move on it and happily did find momma bear. Make sure though you bring their recommend amount of water per person, you will want it!
Great hike. This is a good way to spend the day. You should go during some time when people wouldn't be outside (Ex. Overcast, Chilly, Holiday) because it is very crowded. Mildly athletic clothing will work, and sneakers are good footwear. The hike itself takes about five hours and has lots of rock scrambling and harder stuff. It is good to be in decent shape. The view and nature is incredible. I recommend going up on the rocks and taking the fire road down. This is a great hike and I 100% recommend it.

The Circuit Hike on Old Rag brings a little of everything in one nice, neat package. The circuit takes hikers winding up through Shenandoah forest in the lower sections, then up through more exposed rocky terrain and then back through covered trails to complete the loop.
Old Rag Circuit Hike 9.1 miles Strenuous Friday 12/6 8:30 am Carpool from South End Albemarle SQ. Not only is the Old Rag Mountain circuit hike the most popular hike in Shenandoah National Park, it was recently ranked one of the top 25 hikes in the world! And no wonder.

There are several ways to hike Old Rag, but the most popular is a 14.5-km circuit that takes you up the Ridge Trail, across the rock scramble to the summit, then down the From Old Rag parking lot, we walked along Route 600. The first 3 km was an increasingly steep climb along a beautiful wooded trail.
With breathtaking views of Skyline Drive, the Old Rag hike is one of the most popular scramble hikes in the region. The 8.8-mile circuit is challenging, however, and not recommended for small children, Hurlburt says. Parking is available in a lot a mile or so from the trailhead on Nethers Road.
