I frequent the trails during the Fall season, which in my opinion is the best time to go. You are less likely to get bitten by insects. However, you gotta be careful when following the trails, always have a trail map with you and bring a buddy. I went alone here and got lost, luckily I had the map with me. Some trails seem to have lost their trail markers which could make it confusing. Also pay attention to the trail markers' colors since some of the trails intersect, which if you don't pay attention, you could easily be following a whole different trail. The trails each have unique sceneries, the map tells you where you can see birds, snakes, nd different animals. Really take time to slow down and appreciate the beauty of this state park. The trails are not usually busy unless you go near the residential side, there's a lot of people on bikes. The beach and camping side is definitely busier. Day parking is now $7.
This is our to go to place for camping although it's a bit tight for big rigs, the site are a little on the narrow side but the space between each campsite makes up for it if you live close it would be wise to ckeck out the number site your interested in we've found it says 50' but sometimes you have to park the truck at an angle on the edge of the road but our 39' will go in..and it also a hop skip and a jump to the beach so be ready to eat some sand..
Great Virginia State Park campground with lots of water/electric rv camp sites with beach access within 100 yds of most sites. Bath houses well maintained and located throughout the campground. There is a 2 position dump station near the entrance. Make a reservation on Reserve America. $40/night.
The history. 1619 - where it all began. It was and is still a beautiful spot. Unique landscape. Still gorgeous. Breathtaking. Swelled my heart. The artifacts I saw that were preserved on display as I walked through the park — a truly humbling experience. I experienced the greatness of the natural wilderness, the genius of the indigenous and the sadness of the legacy left by the settler colonialists, the very antithesis of “fair trade.” Those who came to stay... displaced the original inhabitants who had in fact civilized the territory and made it habitable.
Loved camping here. We were 2 sites down from the restrooms/showers. It’s was close enough to to the beach that we could hear it clear. It was very peaceful. My recommendation would be bring a small heater for the night in the fall and an safe A/C for the little ones for a tent if you’re camping in a tent. Would highly recommend ❤️
