When we stumbled across this congregation we fell in love. Casual, not fussy (a big one for me). Fairly small so we quickly felt like part of the community. Very welcoming of all sexual orientations and gender identity. Intelligent thoughtful people. It was once atheistic but has shifted slightly to be more spiritual.
If you don't want to spend your Sunday morning worshiping anyone or anything, come to Prairie, where the members really are in charge. It's a community that provides a rich learning environment without dogma or creed, where individual freedom of belief is fundamental, and where Sunday programs may be called "services," but never "worship services." It's also the place where you can attend the monthly meetings of the Humanist Union of Madison.
When I first learned about Unitarian Universalism, I was intrigued. Then when I attended my first service at Prairie Unitarian Universalist Society, I knew I had found my tribe. This group is so warm and welcoming. It's a place with no dogma to impose. Instead, a set of ethical principles guides the group. Social justice issues are high on the agenda. If you are looking for a sense of community, without dogma, this could be your tribe too.
Prairie is a lovely intergenerational space for our family, with smart, justice-seeking folks that we're enjoying getting to know. I visited all the UU communities in Madison, and this was the one that felt the most welcoming and least overwhelming. The religious education program for kids is especially great -- I love knowing that I can spend an hour thinking, learning, and singing with other adults who also care about how to make the world better, and know that my kids are in good hands and learning too.
