A wonderfully approachable art museum. Wide range of works, and styles. This is a great museum for all types of people, even ones who don't usually enjoy museums. The opening of the wings is a graceful and lovely sight if you can catch it but the architecture overall of the building stands on its own. Love the folk and self taught artist, and photography galleries especially.
Loved the place. In my opinion the building is better than the galleries. But needless to say the galleries were also perfect ! They had some very unique works that you may not find at other museums. Plus you have a great view of the lake from the museum! So it’s def #1 thing to try out in mileaukee.
My daughters and I have always been fans of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Our most recent visit was on a free day. The building is a marvel to see and a piece of art in itself. This most recent visit was different from visits in the past as it is our first since the remodeling was completed. They still displayed almost all of our favorites, but the layout was confusing and almost labyrinth like. It might make perfect sense to an art major, aficionado or the curator, but to the general public art lovers like us... it was confusing. The signage and layout is by regions such as American art or European art. As it is a Public Museum it just seems right, in my humble opinion, that it should have a layout easier for the general population to follow. Other than the layout, we still really enjoyed our visit and will certainly visit again. One last note... one of my favorites, The Two Majesties, needs better lighting as it loses the sun (one of the two majesties).
This place is like heaven on earth to me...I'm fascinated. I live in Chicago and my friend suggested I come up to see this museum knowing I would love it. So, l drove up in August just to see it. The exterior is memorizing...I could look at it all day. In fact, I have on a few occasions now. I was a tad disappointed when I first went in August because the wings were "down" for the month for maintenance. HOWEVER, when I went back in September they were "up" for the month which gave me views most wont ever get to see. The wings typically lower at 5:00 p.m. on a normal day. However, since they were up, all the views up and out of the atrium windows were unobstructed during twilight...all the way until 8 p.m. when they closed. It was surreal...no one was there except my hubby and I. It felt like we were on some fantastic space ship....perfectly white and silent with a sea of blue out each window. The museum itself is beautiful and brilliantly laid out. Each room has an ambiance that was thoughtfully matched to the pieces within it. I cant say enough how much I love this museum.
Gorgeous campus with amazing views of Lake Michigan. I really recommend it for anyone visiting Milwaukee or in the general area. They also have a very nice and established collection full of history. You can't miss this place, it's truly unique. And the cafe is actually pretty good.
The Museum is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Wheelchairs, if needed, are available from the Admissions Desk. Backpack baby carriers are not permitted in the galleries. Service animals and Segways used for mobility are welcome at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

700 N Art Museum Dr Milwaukee, WI 53202. (414) 224-3200. Magnificent architecture. As much as I love art museums, the Milwaukee Art Museum is a bourgeois institution out of touch with contemporary American culture and terrified of offending its visitors with anything remotely challenging.
