“I’ve been training at Mestando Paraíba’s academy for years, since before he made the huge decision to branch out on his own, founding Capoeira Bamba. THE GROUP: Capoeira Bamba is the only capoeira group that offers classes six days a week. There is a friendly, energetic, and supportive vibe; everyone is welcome – regardless of skill or fitness level. I’m a queer, middle-aged woman of colour. Although capoeira is often known to be a ‘macho’ and intimidating martial art, I feel at home at Capoeira Bamba. There are members from all walks of life and we get along swimmingly. Many of the students make fast friends and hang out or practice outside of class. THE INSTRUCTORS: Mestrando Paraíba: Training since the age of 12, Mestrando Paraíba is a skilled and experienced capoeirista. As an instructor and mentor, I’ve seen him grow leaps and bounds over the last several years – both in wisdom and methodology. Although he hails from an incredibly strict and rigid training background, M. Paraíba strives to offer autonomy and flexibility to his students. He often demonstrates modified exercises to accommodate the needs of different students. He listens to feedback and takes it to heart. While he admits, teaching children was not always his strong suit, he has really come into his own. I’ve seen him teach several children’s classes and the kids LOVE him. He strikes the perfect balance between structure and fun. Great behaviour management and anti-bullying strategies, too. I’ll admit, sometimes M. Paraíba can come across as a bit intimidating, but he has a big heart, always giving it his all and cracking a funny joke here and there! He is such an excellent, well-rounded instructor with just the right amount of toughness to get you motivated. Instrutora Neném: What can I say? Instrutora Neném is a ray of sunshine! She is bubbly, kind, warm, and hilarious; but don’t let that distract from the fact that she is an accomplished capoeirista and instructor who kicks some serious butt! Her teaching style is easygoing and she breaks down moves in a way that a toddler can understand — speaking of which, she is amazing at teaching little ones! As a former elementary teacher, I can appreciate how Neném effectively differentiates instruction and holds kids’ attention. THE ACADEMY: The academy is the most beautiful capoeira facility I have ever seen. It is one of the only spaces dedicated entirely to capoeira. During the transition to becoming Capoeira Bamba, many students pitched in to help renovate the space. There is a definite sense of pride and ownership we feel towards it. The interior consists of beautiful dark, hardwood floors; a feature logo wall with hand-burned details, a funky graffiti accent wall by a local artist; and large, full-sized mirrors along most walls. Some of the equipment includes free weights, strength training and conditioning equipment, a heavy bag, a variety of martial arts pads and targets, gymnastics equipment, a large, inflatable gymnastics pad, etc. There is too much to list! Attendance is tracked by a barcode scanning system. Those with top attendance can win free private lessons from M. Paraíba.”

“I was so hungry I didn’t take much photos. Had Nam Kao, Lao sausage with sticky rice and chicken roll. Honestly worth every penny. Fey, hopefully I spell her name correct was super accommodating. I am definitely going back here with a friend. Delicious place. I enjoy every meal. As a Thai/Lao person who had a lot of Lao food I would say this place is authentic. Great menu. Thank you for the service!”

“Attending this function was the best experience of my life! Yes, the merchandise is expensive but wow 🤩 the show was fantastic!!! The tickets are worth the price. I would recommend paying extra to get better seats. An extra 10-20 is completely reasonable. Now let’s talk about the band. So often in performances like this the band is hardly ever seen, or even noticed. This time their was an amazing view of the band and singers and the synchronicity of the music to the movement was so beautifully choreographed that it was like the musician were genuinely watching the show and playing to the movement of the performers and not their music sheets. This is extremely hard to do. Somehow, they mastered this skill so well I’m to this day it had me shocked and amazed.”

“I could not have had a better bridal henna experience than I did with Sonia! From the moment she arrived to when she left - I felt so comfortable and well taken care of. Sonia is a true professional and she is EXTREMELY good at what she does. Even prior to our appointment together, I was given pre & post care instructions, had consistent check ins with her team and everything was well-explained in the initial contract so there were no confusions regarding timings/payments/due dates and what to expect. Sonia's henna quality is also superior! My stain turned out so dark and so beautiful. Sonia's team is also exceptional! In the evening, Sonia and her team provided party henna services for my family and friends and the experience was great! Everyone loved their henna, sonia and her team's vibe during the event! - I don't have professional pictures yet but will update the review with the final stain once I do -”

“This was our first time dining. Nice interior, quiet music, food is delicious, we tried a couple of dishes, the only disappointing thing is probably the MANTI, they were too dry and I suggest putting the cream on a separate plate, so customers can add as much as they want.”

“Gas, diesel and pump out all available here. There is at least 75-100 feet to turn around and plenty of space to wait when there is a line up. They also sell ice. There is a public toilet around the back of the building. Staff is very helpful with docking. Tip them, they work hard especially on the hot, busy summer weekends.”

“The Toronto Island Pier is a stunning destination that you can reach by enjoying a pleasant cruise ride from the Toronto side. After a leisurely walk through the lush gardens of the central island, you'll arrive at this magnificent pier, which is truly breathtaking. From the pier, you'll be treated to mesmerizing views of both downtown Toronto and the picturesque waterfront. Its strategic location ensures that you can appreciate the beauty that surrounds you from every angle. The pier is thoughtfully designed and offers ample space for groups to gather and enjoy their leisure time. It's a perfect spot to relax and unwind. Looking out across Lake Ontario is a real delight, even though the vastness of the lake means all you can see is water stretching out to the horizon. The pier itself is spacious, allowing many onlookers to enjoy the view simultaneously. While there are a few benches at the end of the pier, they may not be enough to spend a substantial amount of time on. Additionally, there is a captivating mural painted on the floor, adding a touch of artistic beauty to the surroundings.”

“Came here with friends for dinner! I really enjoyed the atmosphere! Wait is quite long- I think we queued for about 2 hours during dinner time. I don’t really think it was that worth the wait, it was decent although I wouldn’t consider it anything extremely special. I think the meat quality is not bad and the soup is pretty good though. Service is standard. Spicy soup tasted too oily so it was difficult to eat any vegetables that were submerged into it- i also kind of wish it was spicier. Sukiyaki was not bad, definitely very sweet but still appreciated it! Overall, would maybe come back in the future! Wouldn’t necessarily recommend but I think it’s a good hotpot place out of a lot that we have in Toronto/GTA.”

“Price is higher due to location, otherwise the pizza is actually decent! There are only 4 options - 2 vegetarian and 2 meat. We got the Classic Super. You can also add on Italian herbs or chilli flakes.”

“Hidden cafe on the Ward Island. Gives an opportunity to sit under the trees and close to the water. All employees were nice and friendly, but we had a not-so-friendly waiter. Still, giving a 4 star for the overall experience. Food prices were high as expected, but not too bad comparing some other heavy tourist attractions.”

“This wooden church was built in 1884 at a cost of $2,000. Mr. A.R. Dennison was the architect. A moving force behind the construction of an island church was The Most Reverend Arthur Sweatman (1834-1909) who later became Lord Bishop of Toronto, Lord Archbishop of Toronto [1907 - 1909], and Primate of All Canada [1907 - 1909]. The island church functioned as the Bishop's chapel-of-ease in the long summer idyll of the last century. Some of Toronto's leading families such as the Masseys and Gooderhams assisted in bringing about the establishment of the church during their summers on Toronto Island.”

“Great location. Friendly staff. We didn't expect too much from the food, but it was not so bad. They have a kids' menu -an average of 8$ per meal. And the mains are on average 18$. I liked that they had a “healthier options” like salmon salad - with lots of greens.”

“The food tastes delicious I ordered the Basil & Chili Lamb and Burmese fried rice. I love the lamb, it doesn't smell anything, the meat is so tender and juicy and tastes so good, spicy, salty, and a bit sweet. The fried rice, for me, tastes a bit bland but when you eat it together with the lamb it makes a perfect combination. The service and ambiance are also very good. The server knows about the food very well and can give you a recommendation when you don’t know what to order.”
