This place will be the thing I take home with me from my trip to Oakland and SF. Such a beautiful place, in every way. Incredible artwork, a beautifully curated museum and the time we spent speaking with Jil was wonderful too. Came away incredibly grateful that this place was brought into existence.
This is an excellent little museum/mural that everyone should visit! Jil, the owner of the house and museum director, was so kind and willing to answer all of our questions. The museum is just a few rooms, but it’s packed with information, stories, and photos, with a special focus on women leaders in the Black Panther movement and the Survival Programs that they led in Oakland and around the country. Be sure to text in advance to let Jil know when you’re coming, and leave a donation as well.
Jill is an amazing host and guide - not just through the mural and exhibit, but the rich history and speaking truth to power about the lived experiences of the Black Panther Party, and the powerful Black Women who were the majority of the party. The incredible range of social programs, feeding, clinics, poverty alleviation, etc they ran was impressive, and set the stage for the universal preK, school breakfast and lunch programs, healthcare and so many more, that we don’t credit them for! Our team was so grateful to be in community with Jill and our ancestors, and that she has built this space, and a beloved community around it.
A day after my visit and I’m still reliving the experience. I was able to easily schedule a viewing appointment for same-day without any fuss. The research was thorough and comprehensive, especially given the subject is misunderstood. I’m looking forward to returning once the upstairs is opened and/or there are more events. As someone pretty knowledgeable of the subject, there is something for the whole family to learn.
I can’t thank Jil enough for taking the time to walk us through the exhibition. Thank you for opening your home to us and for this incredible museum in honor of the women of the Black Panther Party.
This history and space is so important to our history, thank you for sharing it.
A must visit when your in Oakland.
