(April 12, 2019, 10:49 am)November 21 was the opening day of the beautiful Niles Canyon Christmas train. The train is 1/2 mile long and every car is decorated differently. Santa comes to visit and you can walk thru each car from front to back to see all the decorations. We ride the train every year and this year it happened to fall on our 30th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful time, sipped some wine, had food to eat and cookies and a special treat of chocolate dipped fruit. The gentle rocking of the old train , the lights a little dimmer, and the charm of going back in time for a couple hours makes any trip a wonderful; adventure for a couple or the whole family. (March 12, 2019, 2:52 am)My wife and I recently walked about the Niles Canyon Railway museum while waiting for one of the Niles Concerts in the Square (the area in front of the museum) to begin, and several years ago we took a ride on one of the restored trains. It's a little gem of a railroad museum in one of the old historic railroad towns that dates to the intercontinental railroad (1869). The museum resides in an old historic train station, not the original, but turn of the 20th century. The train ride and the museum are a great family outing. Kids, big and small, will especially love the train ride.
(January 1, 2019, 4:16 am)It’s our family’s Christmas tradition to take the Niles Canyon Christmas train each December. They decorate each car with christmas lights and Santa walks down the aisle taking pictures with all the kids. A great family adventure well worth the cost.

The schedules vary depending on the season and what train rides (train - steam, diesel) and the accompanying number of cars. Departures usually run in the ~30 minutes time period with a 15-20 minute overlay at the station, and return departure. See the Niles Canyon Railway website for further times and schedules.

Niles Canyon Railway is one of the few local places where you can actually ride some classic train cars. You can start from either the Sunol station (off I-680) or the Niles station in Fremont near State Route 238. I started from the Sunol side and did not realize how packed and popular this place is.
