lots of bears, you're guaranteed to meet one if you stay the night, like we did.It climbed the tree and got our food, circled our tent as we sat inside, and didn't appear at all frightened by the people around us, all at 4 in the morning. Be aware of the bear cave near the trail to. But lots of scenery. And the water's good if you boil it. Just be careful
Great campground, relatively easy hike in, with fire rings and stoves
Hoegees was awesome!! It was like we were hundreds miles away from LA yet we were just 30 minutes. The outhouses are closed, one of the volunteers said they’re going to be taken down but honestly, it’s not hard to just pick up your t.p. And throw it in your trash. If you go here just know you have a 99% if encountering a bear. A bear around 300lbs entered our campsite around 5pm and stayed til 6am, so it was safe to say that we knew it was gonna be a long night. I wouldn’t come here w/o a bear canister, you can hang your food from a tree but these bears are smart & know how to maneuver in their home, it’s just a simple climb and snip or climb and pull and bam your good is gone. Don’t ever underestimate a bears brain. It seems like they know to come an hour before sunset to take off right before sunrise. They pretty much ran the campsite overnight & were going to scan every inch of it for food, a bear ended up sniffing my head and then sitting right next to me for a minute or two to itch his fleas and drink water. Very scary, my heart was pounding outside my chest but I just had to keep telling myself no matter how scared I was *they are only sniffing for food, they don’t want to hurt you, nobody has been attacked here so don’t panic & you’ll be ok* we had 4 other campsites occupied during our stay and we all worked together once the bear first came. Overall amazing experience, seen so much wildlife. Please take out what you pack in!!! Don’t be those people who come into NATURE and trash it, it’s not safe, and things can take up to 500years to disintegrate. A bear found out trash at night & tore it up but I still cleaned it up in the morning and took it out with us. I’ll definitely be back but with a better light for the night(it gets pitch black at night & if you’re having a fire & looking for bears regular lights do not do the job. Have fun!
Nice campsite, but if outhouses aren't open, you need to use nature
So I ended up in Hoagees on a day that ended up pouring rain in March, so my experience may be different than yours. The home up is nice. There is some expectation gain so although you get exercise it is not a tough climb. The campground itself is pretty primitive, which is fine depending on your expectations. The bathrooms (pit toilets) are rough. They are at least 10 years past needing to be replaced. There is no way, but when we went the stream was flowing right next to camp. Water is good but obviously needs to be filtered. Peaceful location depending on the number of people. Wood fires were permitted when we were there. For being this close to LA, it is a nice place to take an entry level backpack without too much trouble. The scenery is very pretty. Do it as a day hike first then come back for an overnight. I think you'll enjoy.
626-574-1613 Mt Wilson, at 5,712 feet, is the peak with all the radio towers that sits behind the LA skyline. It's not the tallest peak in LA, but it's a great hike with a fun summit.
30 mins - Hoegee Campground 5 mins - Winter Creek Trail junction (left route goes back to Chantry, right to Wilson Observatory) 30 mins - Chantry Flats parking was clearly visible from the trail
