I heard about this place from a local when I was cruising through Tahoe in my 79 Rabbit. It was missing and not running right. Maybe from going over the pass? Anyway the fella and his dog greeted me and he opened the hood and saw that the distributor cap was loose or something. Fixed it on the spot for no charge! What a guy! I dropped off a bottle of Casa Migos that night. Hopefully the bears didn’t get it! Wish I had a sweet Westy for him to work on…..someday….
I was 1/2 way through a 7000 mile trip in my 1989 vanagon Westfalia with a 2.5l Subaru engine. I arrived at Sugar Point State Park in Lake Tahoe and found it difficult to shift into 1st and 2nd gear. With a poor internet connection at the park I googled vanagon repairs. I found shops in San Diego, L.A , and Washington State. I figured the rest of my trip was hosed! I drove out of the park searching for better internet and parked downtown to run another internet search. To my great surprise I found OutWesty in Lake Tahoe. It was after 5pm and the shop was closed but I left a voice message explaining my problem Around 7pm Dave calls me and tells me he was checking his messages and called to find out the problem. Dave said he was busy but if I could bring the van by the next morning he'd take a look. Dave then asked... are you okay?... are you safe? What an amazing thing to ask! I replied... I'm good. The next morning Dave checked my clutch linkage... all good. He checked the clutch master cylinder... no leak. Dave then took a small cup with a hose attached and bleed the clutch master cylinder... pumped up the clutch and told me to take the van for a drive. The van drove like it was brand new. Dave remarked the problem was the clutch master cylinder. I went around the corner for coffee and a donut. An hour later Dave called and said the van was ready! I asked... do you think I can still make it to Yosemite? Dave said... sure! My trip was back on! Dave asked.... How did you find my shop to call. I replied.... Divine Intervention!!! Many thanks to Dave and Outwesty!!!
I recently bought a 1982 DeLorean that had not run in over 15 years. Dave was able to restore the car to new running condition by meticulously going through every inch of the car. Dave’s knowledge of DeLoreans is incredible and he was highly communicative through each step in the restoration process. I would highly recommend to anyone needing DeLorean service. The car is now in Connecticut living the dream!
Dave is a highly knowledable Vanagon / Westy mechanic and an all-around nice guy. My van started developing some clutch issues on the drive up to Tahoe and were concerned we wouldn’t be able to make it back or continue our trip. Dave spent 30 minutes with us to diagnose the issue and was able to get us back on our way. If you have a Vanagon, Dave is a good guy to know!
Best weekend ever! Dave is so accommodating and really will do anything to make sure your experience is top notch. We took two vans on a trip from Santa Cruz to Big Sur and we could not have had more fun. The vans come fully stocked with kitchenware, beds, water and stoves so you can easily pack up and go to the next stop without spending time tearing down camp. The vans are clean and in very good condition. You can tell Dave takes great care of these and you really feel like you've stepped back into time. After a few days on the road in one of his vans, you will find yourself with major Westfalia fever and will want to own one yourself! 10/10 would recommend to a friend :)
