Louis Stelzer County Park

“Beautiful hike didn't think it would be that great of a hike. I was dead wrong as we kept ascending up to the peak. Started at Riparian trail to Stelzer Peak and a lot of beautiful places in between. The only difficult part was right before the peak the incline is no joke. When you look at the last part of the hike you may feel like throwing in the towel. I understand, if your not used to walking or hiking you may want to tackle this slowly..... Or gradually make your way up. There are spots with some shade to take breaks in between on your way up. I would definitely recommend this hike for anyone, saw families hiking thru the lower part of the trail and only 2 other hikers at the top. It's a great hike going up and down. Parking is not free for this one but only 3 dollars there are camp sites, tot lots for the kids, bathrooms not portapotties. Didn't get a chance to explore the rest of the park but worth coming back.”

El Cajon Mountain Trailhead Parking

Address: 12777 Wildcat Canyon Rd, Lakeside, CA 92040, USA

Park

“This is the official start of the El Cajon trail hike. Free parking untill 5pm; if you think you will be longer than that park on the street. About the hike: this is one of the most strenuous and serious hikes in SD. I am an adventure trail runner and hiker, and how done this hike bunch of times. Best season to go is winter, and avoid going anytime May -October. This hike is known to be one of the hottest around. You gotta be prepared...sun hat, sunscreen, plenty of water and food. Earlier in the day you go, better. If you are lucky enough to go on overcast day, you are GTG! Be prepared for a lot of "up and down" and not steady climbs, which makes it that more difficult. Overall, great challenging hike, but come prepared, leave early, and bring water!”

“What a great hike! Dog came along and enjoyed the walk as well. Like a real oasis, the temperature goes considerably down under the trees. Flowers, butterflies, birds... plenty of gorgeous nature and impressive views to enjoy. Restrooms available at the entrance. No stores to get water near by so bring plenty of water with you. No handicap access. A stroller with offroad wheels may work.”
