My daughter Nicole was admitted for treatment two months ago. She has been haunted for this ED for two years. She is a senior now and it was devastating for her to find out that she needed inpatient treatment. Since day one, I could see the difference that caring and professional people can do in the lives of these young girls fighting with ED. Steve, our Clinical Director was able to find a way to help her figure out the bottom line of her disorder, which is usually past traumas, loss of their voices...She is able to use her voice more often and be determined to keep going in this long recovery. She is very strong and with all the counseling and skills received I know she will be a true happy woman to tlive her life in full!! Our daughter, Katie, was admitted to PDV in June 2011. At that time, her father and I barely knew what an eating disorder was, and certainly not how serious a disease it is. While it was clear that Katie was not well, it was a tremendous struggle to convince her that she needed help and that she needed to stay at PDV. Not only did she need to get better, but we did too. We had fallen into unhealthy behaviors over time and it took us awhile to figure out what we needed to do to be healthy again. The staff at PDV did an amazing job guiding us on our journey home. They had the compassion, strength and knowledge that we needed in our time of crisis. It's a lot of hard work, but so worth it. Eating disorders don't just go away, new challenges happen all the time, but we talk openly about things now. We have Steve, Dana and the PDV staff to thank for saving our daughter and giving us our family back.
Bridge of Life
For most of my youth and adulthood I was a patient. I went from facility to facility each time marveling I was still somehow alive. It was painful to give up my ED, the familiarity and comfort it feigned, the false reassurance I needed it in order to survive. I got better finally. I did not act out. The urge to do so was almost innate, compulsive. I trusted, I let go, I took direction. I went home and for the first time I did not relapse and I knew in order to keep that I had to give back. But what could I possibly give? The allure of the ED still lurked – despite this I took a chance - took the job. Oddly, the more I gave, the less my ED appealed to me, til one day it didn’t at all. I was free. I kept giving. I wanted to. It was rewarding. To see these girls fight and win. Steve: He has a gift, a gift he may not fully realize – he pushes the ED out and I don’t know if he knows that. The program – ultimate structure, steady and consistent, it breaks down every habitual behavior til its purged out, renders you able to behave your way into living. Carol: she gave my ED the ultimatum it needed - and I grew up. Thank you. I will be okay. I gave my heart – my experience, strength, and hope. I will never regret it.
