Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Address: 2605 Adobe Canyon Rd, Kenwood, CA 95452, USA

Park

“Beautiful campgrounds with a neat observatory. The bathrooms are ventilated, with flush toilets and actual lighting. There are showers that take quarters, but none of our group ever needed to use them. They were quite clean though. Quite close to the city should an emergency arise. Good for families. Beware of night hiking, as we ran into a couple mountain lions on a rather foolish excursion after dark. They're more scared of you than you are of them but you should still exercise great caution around wild animals. Stick to the daytime for such activities and you'll be fine.”

Willow Creek Environmental Campground

Address: Willow Creek Rd, Duncans Mills, CA 95430, USA

Campground Lodging Park

“Got out of SF for a few days and decided to come check out this newer campground addition to the Russian River. First, from all sides there are some beautiful views here. We met the ranger that patrolled the site and he was friendly and informative about the area, and enthusiastic to share his outdoors knowledge with us. The campgrounds themselves are classic fare with a fire pit and picnic table located at each one. The campgrounds are made to fit ~2 2-person tents and have space to set out a kayak. The grounds are right along the river and very accessible during high-tide, and sometimes you might run across mosquitoes if the river is at its lower points. I felt very safe staying here and we enjoyed access to the river both out to the ocean side, and down stream. Stop by for some fun!”

Peaked Hill

Address: Jenner, CA 95450, USA

“A great lookout point in Sonoma Coast State Park with amazing 360 degree coastal views. Hike there via the various trails in the Park or simply park off the side of the road and hike the quarter mile or so to the top.”

Laguna de Santa Rosa Trail

Address: 6303 CA-12, Santa Rosa, CA 95409, USA

Park

“The laguna seems to attract lots of birds, including accidental migrants as well as local "usual suspects". If you're not a birder, the trails are great for walking and/or jogging. But there's not much shade. At some times of the year, the grass can get high along some of the trails, so be careful to do a "tick check" upon exit. A treasure close to the urban centers.”

Joe Rodota Trail

Address: Sebastopol, CA 95472, USA

Park

“We ride this trail to Sebastopol a couple times a week. It's kept clean and maintained well. It's also a beautiful trail with benches along the way to stop and enjoy a snack or have a quiet conversation. It can get busy so be sure to be safe on the trail.”

Red Hawk Park

Taylor Mountain Regional Park

“Great views of Santa Rosa and the surrounding area. Steep portions on the trails and very little shade. Better pick an overcast cooler day and take lots of water. We really enjoyed the hike and will be back for more. Also a great workout or preparation training for steep longer hiking trails.”

Sonoma Coast State Park

Address: CA-1, Bodega Bay, CA 94923, USA

Park

“We were there on a clear day, temps in the upper 70s, a slight breeze. This beach is where the Russian River greets the sea. Flocks of pelicans soared gracefully overheard. A perfect spot to appreciate the ebb and flow of the ocean waves, and simply relax while reflecting on life.”

Shell Beach

Address: Bodega Bay, CA 94923, USA

Park

“Beautiful and popular beach but there are nicer beaches all around it just walking distance.”

Pomo Canyon Trail

Address: Pomo Canyon Trail, Duncans Mills, CA 95430, USA

Campground Lodging Park

“Really nice trail. It connects the beach and Highway 1 to the campground, and makes for a really good day hike. The upper trail goes to the top of the hill and has great views of the ocean, while the lower trail is shaded by redwoods and has great views of the Russian River. The upper trail is overgrown by grass in some sections, so watch out for ticks.”

Sonoma Coast State Park — Willow Creek Addition

Address: Willow Creek Rd, Duncans Mills, CA 95430, USA

Park

“We went on a weekday and saw more animals than people. It was almost completely quiet, just an occasional bird singing and a little rustle of the wind through the trees. Only word of caution is to look out for the poison oak.”
