Great hiking here and access to separate trails for runners and cyclists. Parking could be better.
Beautiful, great trails (rocky), views of the mountains. Careful of rattle snakes during the rattle snake season, area is popular for snakes too. I don't bring my dog here during the summer, after it gets below freezing at night then I feel more comfortable taking them here.
This trail is great for 2 reasons.. first, there is something for everyone: both young and old can enjoy beautiful geologic formations while walking a fairly flat initial loop that is very well maintained. For the more adventurous visitors, this trail covers in excess of 20 miles of rugged, Rocky terrain that will give even the fittest athletes a great workout!
Second, regardless of your discipline (hiking, running, mountain biking, photo capturing.. etc) you are bound to encounter like minded people here. It is an environment that welcomes people who enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities. If you have not visited yet, I would strongly recommend it in the future. Water fountains are available, including a ground level one for dogs, as well as two restrooms.
For a beginning hiker, this trail is great. Nothing too challenging and wonderful views. Avoid going on the weekends if you value solitude and a silent, peaceful experience.
We had a great time hiking Devils Backbone. The trail is relatively easy and the views are gorgeous. There were tons of children and families on the trail and its suitable for all abilities. I would recommend the hike to the Keyhole, the views are stunning! Devil’s Backbone Open Space is just lovely. You can view it with various slow drive boys or park the car and get a closer view.
