“Excellent, informative tour. I was surprised we were allowed to enter the glass house. There are longer tours so you can see some of the other buildings too. I do not recommend the 3 hr, no-tour entry, unless you are already very well-versed in the history of the grounds and of Phillip Johnson. Our guide Perrie was very knowledgeable and personable. Parking is $4/day in town-there is no free parking anywhere so don't bother trying. You may need to walk 4+blocks to get to the offices/retail shop for the Glass House so leave yourself time. Check in at the store, and when it's time, you board a larger, comfortable van and drive several miles away. The driver is a bit of a maniac. This was my least favorite part. You will not be able to enter the property by any other means as it is fenced and gated. While there is no hiking required, you should be healthy enough to stand for an hour, with some walking on stone-grit paths and grass, with slight inclines. There are no bathrooms on the grounds but you will be offered bathroom use at the store before you leave. This is NOT appropriate for children-in fact, must be over 10 years old. As a schoolteacher, I would not recommend this to any young person unless they have an interest in architecture or the modern and post-modern style, or if they are very curious by nature. Parents, also please keep in mind, that people travel from all over the country to take this tour-will they have the experience they planned for while your child is also on the tour? Cam your child remain solemn and distraction-free for the length of the tour? If not, Grace Farms is 7 miles away and may be a better place to visit. There is no touching allowed at all, and it is all talking and looking, with historical details of the era and of Philip Johnson's life and that of his contemporaries.”

“The Glass House is quite an astonishing example of modern architecture sited amongst a stunning landscape. The former home of Philip Johnson who bought the land in1947 and lived there until his death in 2005. It really is a well organized tour that originates from the Elm Street museum and shuttles you to the home. Enjoyed the tour immensely and loved the ride with the guide back to the museum store pointing out other examples of modern architecture in New Canaan. The tour tickets can be organized via the website. We went on the last tour of the day which has the most beautiful afternoon lighting.”

“Documenting the town’s past, the New Canaan Historical Society (founded 1889) owns or operates eight museums and historic buildings, most of which are located at the society’s campus on Oenoke Ridge. Of all the society’s properties, only the Little Red School House and the Gores Pavilion (more below) are off campus. At the main location you can check out exhibitions expertly curated from the society’s massive collections, and get a taste of life in New Canaan in days gone by at the Rock Schoolhouse (1799), Cody Drug Store (1845), the Town House (1825), the Hanford-Silliman House (c. 1764), the Rogers Sculpture Studio (1878) and the Tool Museum and Printing Office. The main exhibit in summer 2019 was “Shoes”, with 200 pairs helping to map out the shoemaking industry in New Canaan, which flourished for more than a century.”

“I'm in love with the place! All the experiences we had back there were amazing! We just threw our daughter's birthday party there and all kids loved the workshop, instructor and the place itself! The staff are amazing, very helpful and efficient! Totally recommend!”

“Really enjoyed my experience here for the following 2 reasons: (1) The Glass House really looks as pictured, absolutely beautiful. The entire property is worth it just for it's natural beauty, not only the cultural value. (2) The tour experience was wonderful, the tour guides were experienced and passionate. So much so they were having other tour guides sit in on tours so they could improve their skills. Yet the tours guide knew more than anyone could imagine, and were experienced in this field of architecture. Lastly, it is also very easily reachable by the train, the train stop is right across the street from the visitor center, and they take you buy bus to the property.”

“I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Glass House last spring and enjoyed the entire 2.5 hours I was able to spend in the property as part of a guided tour. I would definitely recommend the guided tour if you aren't super familiar with the property itself or Philip Johnson's life personal and professional it was an eye opener even for my intermediate knowledge of his career. Looking forward to going back on another occasion to do a self guided tour! A must visit for any architecture nerd/fan!!! ”
