“Stephen Mather was the founding director of the US National Park Service. He was born and raised in California, but he chose to be buried in the east where his family had long, historical ties. Mather's grave is simple and does not make any mention of his federal service. Plaques in national parks across the US state "there will never come and end to the good he has done." The grave is in Mather's family plot not far from the home he lived in. Plan to park on the small side road next to the cemetery. There is no parking lot or sign to direct you.”
