“I am writing this review about the care given my wife in a five-week rehabilitation for pneumonia and a readmission three weeks later after pain and weakness due to medication changes. I was by her side for almost all of her care, so can give an objective opinion since I observed everything first hand. During the many weeks at River Glen we interacted with various staff on all shifts on all days of the week. I can state that River Glen is staffed by dedicated, caring people who take their jobs very seriously and are generally happy and upbeat. We went through the admissions process twice, once from my wife’s hospital discharge and a second from home nursing care. The admissions process was handled smoothly and professionally, with everything carefully explained. In the readmission from home nursing care, the admissions office worked into a late Friday evening to coordinate doctor signoffs and secure ambulance transportation. This could have been a huge hassle for us, but instead was smoothly done. We received several follow-up calls to tell us how things were going and later to check that we were successfully in our room. We also went through the discharge process to home nursing care from River Glen. This process involved many aspects, from transfer of medications and nursing responsibilities to insurance considerations and readmission rules. Once again, everything was carefully explained in plain English so we knew what was involved and how it would be done. We found the nursing staff to be very proficient and caring. There are professional nurses who directly administer drugs and medications, as well as aides and therapists who provide specialized care and rehabilitation. My wife required physical therapy to help her regain her mobility. We found the therapists to be great coaches who cheerfully motivated her to get going and make daily progress. The facility itself is clean, bright, and cheerful. There is a therapy room with a wall of windows, plus several dining and activity rooms where you can get together with friends and family. You can get coffee, beverages, and snacks at all hours. There are activities going on every day, such as bingo, games, music, and puzzle solving. There are also specials from time to time, such as barbecues, food trucks, concerts, and pet therapy. We were often encouraged to get out of the room and join in. An unexpected plus is the food! The long term head chef at River Glen manages to deliver delicious meals every day, no exaggeration. There are interesting selections you’d not expect in a nursing home, such as shrimp scampi. The meats are tender and the side dishes are flavorful and interesting, with delicious desserts too. As a frequent companion in the room, a meal for me cost $3.00 and was something we both looked forward to every day. Please keep my comments in mind when you consider River Glen for yourself or a loved one. I encourage you to visit and look around at the things I mentioned.”
