As usual, it was wonderful yesterday ... This warm, egalitarian, participatory community has been operating for nearly 50 years (now in its 4th location and sharing space at the Washington Ethical Society). It is a classic - indeed pioneering - "havurah." Visitors are welcomed to services held Saturday mornings at 9:30. Holiday services are also held, times and sometimes locations vary. Services are mainly in Hebrew; Torah discussion (in English) is a highlight. Shabbat services are over just after noon followed by kiddish. Please check the website as on rare occasions services are held elsewhere.

Talia Laster grew up attending Fabrangen Havurah in Washington, D.C., and is a lifelong member-leader in the National Havurah Committee. We will review passages in Pirkei Avot that provide evidence of that process. Joseph Rosenstein is a former chair of the National Havurah Committee.
Fabrangen, which means "to bring together" in Hebrew, was founded in 1971 by a group of Jews seeking to instill progressive values into their worship. An "independent, egalitarian, participatory community," the congregation employs no rabbi; instead, members are called on to lead services.
