Very cool place to go, we did the trail on Wakeford road, at the Northeast end of the preserve area. We got some good pictures of a bald eagle in it's nest and had a wild pig walk out right in front of us! I was scared, my wife was not ???????? it was amazing to see everything basically undisturbed. The water was a deep red color (tannens from the trees?) and the creek was winding right along the creekside bluff trail, not 100% of the time, but you get to see some gorgeous landscape along the creek.
Delightful flora and fauna. Very comfortable well maintained and identified trails. Some ups and downs; some woods and fields. Many choices for all levels and experiences.
I went in 1st time about 6 days ago. The 1st bench was a little worn out but not bad I still used it and was fine, I came back in 2 days later the bench had been changed out for a brand new one. So I have to say up keep is very well maintain, and the walk along the creek is just absolutely beautiful.
Such a unique place . Great for hiking and a truly special ecosystem. You won't find anywhere else like it in Florida .
I absolutely love this place. It has so much variation and is hilly which you dont see much in florida trails. There are several trails here that are decent in length. The shortest one walks you through the woods along a creek then loops around into the hills. The highland trail is one of my favorite just be prepared to get your feet wet. Might want to think about some muck boots. Last few time I have been there portions of the trail are under 6 Inches of water but very much worth soaking your feet for. Make sure you push through the wet areas to Trishas peak it's worth it if you are a nature lover. All In all if you love to hike and haven't been here yet your missing out. I highly recommend this place. If you take 60 east through lake wales watch for the walk-in-water rd (you really cant miss it) turn right then it's about 2 miles or so you will see a brown hiking sign turn right there(forgot the name of the road) and you will run right into it. Enjoy
