Very nice place to get introduced to snorkeling, with a large variety of coral reef life. Entry into the water is sloped and easy, but you really have to get out there to see more variety of sea life. Very broad bay area that can accommodate lots of people. Reservations required for non-Hawaiians! Snorkel gear rentals available, but expensive! Highly recommend you rent off-site at Snorkel Bob's or something else where you can rent your gear at a weekly rate for almost the same price as what they charge here ($40 as of April 2022).

But..... There are better places to snorkel if you don't go past the shallows. Go check out sharks cove or three tables on the north shore. Way more living coral and wildlife concentrated in those areas compared to my experience in Hanauma.

A must see in Oahu. Great breathtaking views, I miss it already and would make it a mission to come back one day. Book 2 days in advance right at 7AM local time to get your tickets in advance, they sell out fast. About $30 Uber each way from the Waikiki area. Plan a nice beach day there, park closes around 3pm, try to eat something before you go (food stand before you enter the park). A big part of this bay is snorkelling with the fishes there. Have a good time!

One of the best beaches I've been to for snorkeling. We saw amazing fishes and they are just everywhere. The coral reef is fantastic to observe just pleas DO NOT STEP OR TOUCH for more than 5 sec - it is a living thing and human suffocate it basically. There is not much natural shade on the beach so either go early to get the spots under the palm trees or make sure you have either a beach umbrella or a good (reef-friendly) sunscreen or maybe both if you'd like to be on the safe side :). Booking in advance is mandatory.
