Wish the tails were longer but they are clean and beautiful.
The Gary L Haller trail runs about 13.5 miles from Nelson Island on the north end of the trail to Northgate street access on the south end. The trail is made up of sections of asphalt and concrete. There are no gravel or dirt sections. The trail is beautiful. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that you are near the city, with thick forested tree cover and the sounds of nature. There are train tracks, running nearby, which can be a surprising reminder of civilization, as they blow their horns and chug by.
The trail is well marked. If you ever are in question of which way to go, you should remain on the main path, as long as you stay on the trail closest to Mill Creek. The trail is wide enough to walk about 3 wide and for bikes to ride side by side. It’s a multi-use trail, where many non-motorized types of travel can be performed, including walking, running, biking, skateboarding, roller blading, etc. Trail users seem to be contentious of each other, with cyclist and folks passing, announcing their presence when needed, and slower visitors moving to the right.
There are 8 access points to the trail, between Shawnee and Olathe. Several of the access points have restrooms and water fountains available. The 13.5 mile distance is beyond the trailheads at each end. The trail length between the northmost and southmost trailhead is approximately 12.5 miles, with an additional length of trail beyond each respective trailhead. You pass over the train tracks at Johnson drive, using a steep sidewalk, which is a bit narrower than most of the trail. Farther south, you pass under the train tracks, through large culverts, at 2 locations.
If you are riding a bike, you may notice that it takes a little more effort, when peddling, as you head south, as there is a slight elevation gain going south of about 275 feet. The elevation at Nelson Island is approximately 738 feet and the elevation at the Northgate access is approximately 1014 feet above sea level. Most of the path is very flat, with an optional steep hill, off the main path, north of Shawnee Mission Park.
If you’re lucky, wildlife can be seen during your visit, from Bald Eagles at Nelson Island, to deer and small animals and birds to the south. I have seen deer standing within feet of the path, as I passed, without any hint of fear.
Great trails to ride your bike or go for a walk with the kiddo in a stroller!!!
I absolutely love this trail! I have biked all portions of it, starting at the Mahaffie Center and terminating at the Kansas River.
The trail offers many fun side routes, along with diverse views and scenery along the way. I would highly recommend detouring into Shawnee Mission Park while traveling the trail. Also, when north of Shawnee Mission Park, divert east on the trail for great views from atop of Blue Bird Hill. The trail from Mahaffie to the river is around 19 miles total, and makes for a great day hike.
Be prepared for some steep hills along portions, but none too demanding.
I love taking short walks on a cool breezy day!
Just watch out for the bikers if you are walking/jogging/running.
I was taken a picture here this was my last walk before I gave birth at full term in February 2017. I was already getting contractions after this walk I guess the ups and downs from the trail really kicked in!
