Spiderwebs everywhere on my early morning hike. It is like a creepier, emptier Mt. Vernon. Check out the collapsed house ruins on the side trail that leads to the Potomac river's edge.
The entrance was closed for vehicle traffic. I parked at the entrance and walked through the side gate. The walk to Mount Aventine was half a mile. As I got closer to the house, there were trees planted on both sides of the path and Mount Aventine slowly began to appear between the trees... Very pretty view. Behind the house is a large field with a path, River Access Trail, to the Potomac River. I stopped behind the house, saw the frame of the smokehouse, and turned around to walk back to the car. Total of 1.05 miles. I was going to hike the trails but my pups already walked over 2 miles before arriving at the park. I didn't think the want to go another couple more miles. The entrance to the Coastal Woodlands Trail is on the right before reaching the house and there is a portable potty in the trees right after the Coastal Woodlands Trail. After passing the trail entrance, the Potomac River Trail entrance is on the left. Look for a rectangular information sign and you will see the trail entrance. Everything is well marked. This park is very quiet and peaceful. I will probably come back and hike the Marsh Trail, which is what I came here for. Didn't realize I couldn't drive up to the house, closer to the trail entrance.
The Mount Aventine house and the history of Chapman landing are fascinating, and the sweeping view of the potomac river offered from the back porch is breath taking... ideal spot for a picnic if the weather is good. However, the park does not have much in the way of walking trails, offering only a couple relatively brief paths down to the river. I was unable to determine whether or not the historic house was open to the public, though it appeared not to be. All in all, it made for a very interesting pit stop, but by no means took my whole day to visit.
It's a nice place to go for a long walk..many trails..overlooking the water. The scenery was amazing
Very beautiful place. I like this place very much. One of my favourite places.
