This place makes it quick and easy to rent kayaks and paddle boats for family adventures. They have a small shop just past the Fudgery (yes, I should be embarrassed that I used the candy store as a landmark). The owner and employees are friendly and knowledge and will get you in the right vessel. Just outside the shop they will get you suited up with life jackets and paddles and then direct you around the corner to the tiny beach front. I think our last visit cost $50 for a pair of 2-person kayak rentals for an hour. Note that they are flexible on the timing. It is also worth noting that one of my sons sounded interested in kayaking only to have him flip out as we tried to get into the kayak. The shop owner was very understanding and refunded our money after spending a few minutes consoling my child and explaining how safe the adventure could be. They could not have been more caring or understanding! My child has gotten over that issue and we have since had a few kayaking tours!
As for the kayaking, it is a few minutes to the open ocean and you can zoom around in one direction to front beach or out to the lighthouse in the other direction. You can also tour the harbor, but that was far less interesting for our taste.
Great time!!! Wonderful staff!!!
TL;DR version: Yes, rent a kayak with them! They provide the best service and you'll have a wonderful time.
Long version: I've mentioned in other reviews you can tell the most about a place by the way they handle unfortunate situations. My wife and I have been coming here for years. We've always had a problem free wonderful day of kayaking on the water. Today, there was a misunderstanding. Their website says they are open from 9 am - 7:30 pm. Turns out they actually close at 6 pm on Sundays. It's on the door. I never saw it, no one mentioned it to me, and I didn't think to confirm, because, well, these days I see the hours on a website and it sticks. We called for a 2:30 put in, but ended up in the water at 3:30. We got back at just before 7:30. The shop closed at 6 pm. They were really worried about us. They had gone searching for us, they called the harbor master, they were really concerned, because from their perspective we were more than an hour overdue. People get hurt out on the water, so the concern is warranted. I was incredibly embarrassed and confused, because I had arrived back on time, I thought. The owner and I had a good conversation. It was important to me that he understood that I wasn't some irresponsible schmuck trying to juice the system. They checked the website. It says 7:30. There was some debate as to when we put in, but I was willing to pay the overage. You know what the owner said to me? Words to the effect of it being such a gorgeous day he'd hate my experience to be ruined by this misunderstanding, and not to worry about any of it. Just come back and visit again. What an absolute breath of fresh air! These days it's really easy to get cynical about people and their motives. Both as a customer and a business owner. Our day ended better than it would have had we returned by 6, because not only did we get a gorgeous day out on the water, my wife and I had our faith that people are inherently good affirmed today. We will only go to the hard working lads and lasses at North Shore Kayak, and you should too. But, be sure to check when you should be back! ;-) Thanks NSK!
The staff was really nice and helpful. They got us our gear right away and let us enjoy the afternoon. The pricing of both their rentals and items for sale we're very reasonable.
This made my New England vacation. I would highly recommend these folks as they were very accommodating and reasonably priced. You wont regret this, on the contrary you'll be glad you did it. I know I certainly was. Sail on!
