I'm a Salem resident and I am on a mission to tour all the local attractions AND places of relevance.
About this one:
This art association is located at the wharf, inside the historical yellow building close to the Friendship vessel and in the Maritime National Historic Park area of Salem. It consists of a gift shop with handmade items from local artists of very reasonable prices, a gallery on the same floor hosting a collection of Paul Nathan artworks, and a large gallery on the second floor. At the time of my visit, the second floor was showcasing a very interesting juried, temporary exhibition of various local visual artists around the theme of storytelling/myths/fairy tales.
The gallery is free and open to the public on weekends.
I think it can be very enjoyable for locals - especially having always new exhibitions - and visitors alike.
If you are visiting Salem, it could make a nice 15/20 minutes visit to get a grasp on the local artistic scene and take a break from more commercial attractions and activities. And to possibly find a unique memento from Salem.

PROs

CONs
Nothing to say here! 😊
A wonderful gallery which displays a variety of works from local artistans. Sculpture, paintings, & photography plus a whole lot more. The Salem Arts Association gallery is always changing their exhibitions every two months, so there is always something new to see. The Salem Arts Association has a large gift shop which includes beautiful hand made jewelry, fashionably designed articles of wearable clothing & accessories. How about a post card or two to send to friends. If you're looking for a unique gift for someone, or maybe for yourself, you can purchase smaller accent pieces of art which may be just the thing you need to hang in that empty spot on your wall, or perhaps to add to the display on your shelf or table. Open on the weekends from 12 to 6PM.
Def worth a visit to find some art from local artists. Not touristy.
I love their new space on Bridge Street. The gallery spaces are really nice and there's always a new exhibit on display every few months. They have a sweet little gift shop, too. Highly recommended.
Salem Arts Association is Salem's greatest achievement because local artists from Salem and surrounding cities come to partake - we display many types of wonderful artwork such as oil & acrylic paintings to woodworking crafted art! The Association gives many an opportunity to meet like minded people, display artwork in the monthly exhibits (during the season) and learn from one another. There are different levels of membership to choose from at an annual low cost. Stop by and visit my favorite place in Salem!
