Very somber and quiet resting place for so many people long forgot by history. Should be taken much better care of but that's why we as a community work together.
Sad, absolutely. Overwhelming, to say the least. There are roughly 10,000 burials in the cemetery from the 1890's - mid 1933, when the hospital started burying in a different cemetery on the grounds. There are records for "Most" of the burials (Name and Date of Death). We are organizing another all volunteer cleanup effort on Saturday October, 21, 2017 from 8:00 AM - 5:00PM. Please feel free to come for a little bit or stay the whole day. Thank you.
Sad, certainly. Overwhelming when you realize that between 10,000 and 35,000 people are interred here, in and amongst the tall trees and scrub. Lonely. There are little metal markers, but no names. Some records are kept at the Tewksbury Public Health Museum. Many records and names are lost forever.
7/10 lack of records - very sad but it happens, 30 years got lost somehow.
5/10 desolation
10/10 spooky

The hospital was established in 1852 as one of three state almshouses needed to help care for the unprecedented influx of immigrants into Massachusetts at that time.

Please join us in the continued cleanup and revival of The Tewksbury Hospital Cemetery on Saturday, October 21, 2017 8:00 AM—5:00 PM at the gate on Livingston Street near the intersection of East Street. We need volunteers for raking, clearing brush and light debris. We could also use some muscle in hauling some of the heavier debris as well.
