My husband and son came a few weeks ago and biked the whole 40-round trip, but this time we came as a family of 6 to bike just a part of the trail. We started at the ball fields in Cannon Falls and biked to the rest area, then back -- about 6 miles total. We liked that the trail is very level, and we took advantage of the scenic pull-outs to take short rest stops/picture breaks for the kids (and me). Even though the trail is level (being former train tracks), the landscape on either side is not, which made for scenic viewing. Sometimes there would be a steep hillside blanketed in golden leaves, or the gently flowing river far below, or vertical rock, or dappled sunlight shining through the forest. Portable restrooms along the trail were a plus. There is a wheel tax that is self-pay ($5/adult), but it is worth it.
If you have been on the gateway you will surely enjoy this ride, only difference?
No hills to climb, just minor moguls!
Amazing and easy trail!! Lots of wildlife to see! We saw a fawn, red squirrels, rabbits, cardinals, bluebirds, goldfinch, and a muskrat. There are plenty of "rest areas" along the trail - some with bathrooms and many with air stations on plus tools. We didn't make it the full stretch but hope to work our way to do the roundtrip endeavor. It was a great way to spend a hot summer day!
***Important info: Bring $5 for a daily trail pass and plenty of water/snacks - there were no spots to get water the 9 miles we rode on the trail."***
Wonderful, well maintained trail for walking/biking. Good mix of sun and shade and enough resting spots along the way. East of Cannon Falls where we got our bikes on was fairly level for the 10 miles that we rode.
