This was my first visit to Lakeside Nature Center. I was surprised by how nice it was in there. It's worth the visit just to see the bald eagles! So majestic. I knew they did great work with injured wild animals but I had no idea how interesting it would be to visit. I know they do special events for children on Saturdays so if you're a parent of younger children and haven't been there, make sure you check it out.
Great place! Free and very educational. You can make it through in 30 minutes, but kids can find hours of entertainment here. There is a large play area with a chalk table, lots of coloring sheets and crayons, dozens of puzzles and toys and hundreds of children's books. Staff was very warm and welcoming.
Great place for low-key parties and to learn about local wildlife awareness and efforts being made to protect wildlife. Employees are well educated about these efforts and willing to engage in a friendly chat and explanation of the facility. Very family friendly!
Brought a baby possum in and they were so wonderful. And come to find out when he feels better actually it's a she we named her Penelope the possum we get to pick her up and let her back out on our property again we live in the country. They encourage animals that are brought in and after their rehabbed to go back to the same property that they were brought in from which I think is really cool. Cuz I'm definitely getting attached to this little girl..
I've been going here for years for hikes and general info for local fauna. The staff is there to educate the public about how essential native plants and wildlife are to Missouri. Years ago there was a huge influx of snakes and rabbits in our yard. I called and they invited me down for info. Turns out they were losing habitat due to construction of a large church. I watched videos and visited the snake exhibits and came away schooled that these harmless snakes eat bugs and mice and actually keep poisonous snakes away. We've taken injured rabbits and birds here and the website has very important info about what to do if you find baby wildlife. I recently took an injured hummingbird in and again received a wealth of knowledge. There is actually someone who rehabs hummingbirds for them. I want that job! These guys are great. If you want to see good use of your tax $$, please visit them.
