Our group had a wonderful time here. Definitely sign up for a tour as you will get much more than you would just dropping-in and walking around (though if that’s all you can do, that’s okay!)
Wyatt did a great job keeping things interesting, especially since we had an eight year-old with us. We learned A LOT about Lake Tahoe. Anyone who enjoys the area will benefit from knowing more and from being reminded that it is a place we need to protect.
It’s not free - they charge 10$ for 1 adult and three kids. the tour is very interesting and lasts less than 30 minutes. the kids are not allowed to play around after the tour - so I won’t recommend it for little kids.
The UC Davis Tahoe Science Center is well worth visiting! It is great to learn about Lake Tahoe and its unique characteristics. Locals can benefit so much from learning about their home environment, and the Tahoe Science center does a great job of encouraging this by offering informative and engaging exhibits to its visitors.
On top of that, the location is gorgeous, and the building itself is very interesting. It prioritizes sustainability and is Platinum LEED certified! This is a great place to spend an afternoon.
This is a great little science center but it's not for everyone. In the tour, they provide a lot of cool information about the lake in a variety of ways. There's a 3D movie on how the lake was formed, a mock-up of a research vessel with a video on how they collect data, and a guide who discusses the watershed and also the food web in the lake and how it has changed from the introduction of invasive species. This was all great for me, but is over the head of small children.
They do have a few interactive exhibits that visitors are free to explore after the tour and this caught the attention of my 6yo - especially the sand box that would project a realtime topographical map over the sand.
The tour does have several places where you can sit, but also some parts where standing is the sole option.
Very Fun but not alot of parking you can get a tour and its just really intresting for how small it is
