“Before I started coming to Backbone, I never really thought that I would “get into” yoga. For the most part, I was very inflexible and believed that, if after years of cheerleading didn’t boost my progress, doing yoga would probably not have an effect, either. Boy, was I wrong… Four years ago, I went to my first Backbone yoga class – the Tuesday night Hot Vinyasa Basics class with Chris Reitz. My preconception of yoga being a slow-but-strenuous practice where you are counting down the minutes to breathe fresh air and take a cold shower quickly dissipated. First, the studio is kept at a temperature of around 85 degrees instead of the 108 degrees that is typical of Bikram yoga studios. This temperature allows for you to still obtain the benefits of increased flexibility/openness without being uncomfortable in sweat and suffocating in a smelly room. Second, the class itself was far from anything that I was expecting. Chris guided us through the poses at a comfortable pace and individually corrected each person’s form (while continuously cracking jokes and adding humor wherever he could). Although I was a bit sore the following day, my body felt so good and I knew that I had to come back. That brought me to Morgan Adams’ class on Wednesday morning…and then Friday morning…and then Saturday morning. Morgan’s class proved to be just as incredible as Chris’. We went through flows at a pace that allowed for you to obtain a great stretch out of each body part. Like Chris, she also gave each individual attention and advice regarding form. This really differed from other studios that I had visited prior, where I had to rely on looking at other classmates to do a pose. Even today, four years into practicing yoga, my form is constantly being corrected – and I love it! This not only shows newcomers that everyone is truly learning on a constant basis, but it really solidifies how individual practicing yoga is. The one-on-one attention that is given at Backbone is superb and allows you to continuously make progress. Every class is completely different from the one prior, and we are constantly doing different flows and learning new poses. While traveling, I always love to try out different yoga studios to continue progressing. With each studio I go to, I always appreciate Backbone more and more. Not only are the instructors amazing, but the camaraderie among the classmates is just as noteworthy. One concern that I had during my journey in yoga was that doing yoga would inhibit my progress in bodybuilding, as increased flexibility is often seen as indirectly correlating to an increase in strength. For me, yoga did the opposite. The more flexible I became, the more muscle I was able to build because my hypertrophy exercises became enhanced – my squats got deeper, my bench press became easier because I was able to arch my back more, my shoulders became more pliable resulting in more enhanced back workouts such as rows, etc. Today, I am doing things that I never believed I would be capable of doing. Never in my life did I believe that I would be able to hold crow, a headstand, handstand, etc., but because of Backbone I am now able to do these moves any many more. Both Morgan and Chris have made my doubts in myself completely vanish. I cannot praise this studio enough.”
