“Si eres latino, albañil e inmigrante, uníos En Brooklyn, Nueva York, la United Handymen tiene más de un año de trabajo socioproductivo. Quizá tras pensar en la fragilidad de lo único que tenía para vender, Diego López decidió que debía organizarse: así formó, con otros inmigrantes como él, una asociación donde romperse una pierna no significara quedarse sin trabajo. Siendo parte de ese grupo de latinos en Estados Unidos que llaman “manitas”, él y otros 7 hispanoamericanos decidieron abrirse paso sin jefes. Pero, ¿cómo crear una empresa en pleno Brooklyn sin dinero? En el 2015 crearon la United Handymen Workers Cooperative. Y como necesitaban una licencia para trabajar, por medio del Center Family Life, se prepararon y la obtuvieron. Pronto comenzaron a ofrecer servicios para remodelar viviendas y reparar muebles. Y aunque fue un inicio difícil, la United Handymen cumplió su primer año de organización planeando y superando retos. Según la Democracy at Work Institute, para el 2013 en Estados Unidos habían al menos 300 trabajadores organizados en cooperativas, como Daniel y sus socios de la United Handymen. Cifra microscópica en relación al total, pero que por otra parte aumenta cada día las probabilidades de que la economía solidaria se abra paso en la Gran Manzana.”
