Had a great day slowly wandering around the grounds and exploring all the buildings in Old Fort Niagara. Learned a lot about the history of this 300 year old fort and why it was so vital. Being located at the mouth of the Niagara River, it controlled access to the Great Lakes and the route West to the heart of the American continent. The French held the first post here beginning in 1679 and built the ‘French Castle’ in 1726, the original lone building of the fort. The British took control of it in 1759, after a 19 day siege and held the post throughout the American Revolution till 1796, when they were forced by treaty to yield it to the US. The British recaptured it yet again in 1813 and it was ceded back to the US once again in 1815, at the end of the War of 1812. It is a bit pricey at $17 a person, but we would definitely recommend seeing this place, but try to go on a cooler day, as it’s a lot of walking.
European-like in its being made of stone. Rare type of attraction for North America. I'd count it as a must visit for anyone in the region to see Niagara Falls. It was an active fort that day many battles, so it has a lot of stories. I'd recommend go to their website and reading the blurb on each building as there are not a lot of descriptions on each building, albeit there are great museums within the complex that describe the fort and the region's history.
We spent 1.5 hrs and didn't get to all the buildings. Our 2 and 5 yr old loved running around finding the numbers of the sights in order, and of course the musket demonstration!! We also did the orientation video at the beginning, which took time, but really helped us understand more as we walked around. The whole place is excellent and you can skim the history or go in depth. Highly recommend!
A well preserved fort run by a private non profit organization. The fort and it’s grounds are clean and well maintained. You get to experience the life of soldiers who served at the fort. The location of the fort on the banks of Lake Ontario makes it extra special. It’s a must see spot if you are visiting Niagara Falls
Beautifully maintained fort and the surrounding state park.we went in the year 2009 may first weeks till it was very cold as we neared the open coast area. It was Sunny still chilly noon.we enjoyed the trip as it was only sparse crowd there. There was a ceremonial parade of security guards which was very interesting. The city of Toronto was hazily visible across lake Ontario. It was half an hour drive to Niagara falls.
