Had a nice chat with Ranger Nick, who shared some of the history of the fort. As we talked, Nick was cleaning and restoring a Civil-War-era rifle. He showed me how the firing mechanism is supposed to operate. We also chatted about the reading of the Declaration of Independence organized by Staten Island OutLOUD, taking place on Independence Day at Fort Wadsworth overlook.
The Visitor Center is the best way to start your visit to Fort Wadsworth. There is a museum which provides a great overview of the historic military base and fortifications and there are park rangers on staff who can point out all the best things to see in the park. Definitely worth your time. - Be advised: this visitor center is open seasonally (spring, summer, and fall) and is usually closed in the winter. Call ahead!
