“So I now have two experiences with these officers and I want to share them and encourage anyone considering reaching out for help to start here. 1st: My daughter had to stay in a hospital in Jacksonville just before Florence came. Officers transported her both ways. Through this process the officers were incredibly compassionate. On the return trip I know the traffic must have been horrible but they kept her cheered up throughout the trip. I am convinced that her homecoming was made easier and less stressful for her by the officer's attitudes. It isn't easy to help a 13 yr old not feel self-conscious or to help a mother feel less anxious when you are transporting a 13 year old. 2nd: The night that the rain from Florence finally did hit my husband and I found two people without a place to stay. The lady was very pregnant and their cell phone would not charge. We were very concerned and offered them a place to stay. There were obvious substance issues but we couldn't find a shelter that would take them that late. We contacted dispatch but there weren't a lot of available resources so we just kept an eye out until the next morning when they left. A few days later the lady got in touch and asked for help. We tried again but she wasn't interested in entering any program. Unfortunately at that point she also wasnt interested in leaving. An officer did come to my home to talk to her and that is the biggest reason I'm writing this. His handling of the situation was really fantastic. He offered her options. He was very patient considering that I was obviously agitated and she wasnt an easy person to talk to. He explained why he wouldnt want to take her somewhere that might be a bad option for her. Made every effort to talk her into accepting an option that would be physically safe. He had to ask her about paraphernalia and when she confirmed that she might have something I got even more upset. He did check her stuff before she was in the police car but I really appreciated his willingness to help me make sure nothing was left behind in my home since it really wasn't his responsibility and handling stuff like that can come with a lot of risk. By that time I was so mad I really did run out of patience but he got her right out of there. I think that interactions being 2 for 2 on compassionate and effective on experiences that go from dealing with a teenager to helping a pregnant addict is impressive. I hope someone reads this because I sincerely believe that they deserve recognition.”
