It was a fairly subtle accent, but everything feels a little more strenuous in July heat/humidity. We only did about 10 miles out and back and didn't finish hiking the trail. There wasn't a readable map as the posted ones case is so weathered and there were no paper maps, but I'm sure there were plenty more trail miles to hike. They have a number of stone campfire sites, that don't look like they have been used recently. I'm definitely interested in checking out more of the Uwharrie national forest has to offer, but to be completely honest this location had me a little uneasy. First there was a number of discarded food items in the homestead, enough to suggest that perhaps someone was squatting there. Then there were several freshly and unnecessary chopped down young trees that were cut and left in the way of the trail. Lastly on the way out we took a different path that goes over a small creek near the trail exit and there were clear fresh footprints in the mud. There really isn't much chance we wouldn't have run into whomever it was on the trail. It really only splits near the top campsites. I expected to see another vehicle when we got to the parking lot, but nope. It may have been nothing or maybe someone is squatting there which isn't in itself a reason for concern, but either way something felt off. I definitely wouldn't go hiking alone there and without some precaution.
Very well marked, nicely groomed trails, excellent all around (:
We enjoyed a fabulous day of exploring and hiking here. The lot for the Thornburg trailhead is small (accommodates 6-8 cars). We arrived early and had no issues with parking, but the lot was full when we left. Immediately upon leaving the parking area you start down a trail and arrive at the Lewis-Thornburg house, which you are able to walk through. Behind it are the balance of the old homestead buildings, barns, and sheds. Be aware in all the old wood there are a considerable number of carpenter bees. After a stroll through the buildings you get to the trailhead. You’re able to explore a gorgeous creek along the way as well as wander through the out and back trail. It’s easy walking, no overly steep climbs. Perfect for a family hike and picnic by the water.
Small gravel parking lot for about 8 cars. Historical Lewis-Thornburg House and out buildings near parking lot. Hiking the Thornburg trail to Robbins Branch Trail to Hannah’s Creek Trail to Birkhead Mts Trail to Camp 3 trail to Birkhead to Robins and back to Thornburg makes a nice loop (about 13.2 miles). Several creek crossing along route, easily rock hopped unless the water high after heavy rains. Plenty of dispersed camping off the trails.
Hiked and camped here several times.
Great place for hiking and backpacking. Good place to learn and test new gear. Not crowded.
Note: This is a wilderness area - don't expect bathrooms or trash cans or water fountains.
