One of the most beautiful churches in the US.
The chirch building is impressive...an Oberlin landmark. For instance the okd style pipe organ let's you know you are in church. But more important than that, the parishioners are welcoming, the sermons relevant and understandable and the music is phenomenal.
Wonderful " inclusive to all" church. People are friendly and loving. Great youth director with wonderful activities and service projects. I would invite everyone to attend.
A great church open and welcoming to anyone. Brandy's front row entertainment is worth the visit alome!!!
This church played a major role in the anti-slavery movement that preceded the Civil War. The stern original interior of the church was completely remodeled in the 1920s to have the soothing, elegant simplicity which one sees inside the building today.
When First Church was built it was the largest meeting hall west of the Allegheny Mountains. In these early years First Church was the focal point of the church community, Oberlin College, and the town of Oberlin. All three were one and the same. Hence the church was referred to as The Meeting House rather than as a church. The congregation still refers to it as The Meeting House even though this building has a much less central role in the community today.
This review only scratches the surface of the interesting history, both fact and legend, which a visitor to First Church can savor and enjoy.
