1st day here was not bad. Picked a spot near the bathrooms just to find out after we arrive that they are closed and must drive to next one down.
Had a great time chilling by the water with my friend for her birthday. It is a beautiful, clear, clean area to camp and hang out, with clean bathrooms and clear paths, as well as driveways and parking. Spacious and open, some desired areas are only a hundred yards away from each other on the water but even then you can't hear much of other people's noise, and plenty of room to get far away from everyone if you desire. Grills are available if you don't make your own fire or bring a portable grill, and the view of the night sky alone is worth it. We saw some amazing things in the sky out there, because the light pollution is so little and the sky was so clear. We can't wait to visit again, this will be our local camping grounds!
Beautiful park! Several hiking/biking trails. Swimming areas and a great place to enjoy nature.
Wish there was a way to know there might be a lamppost on your campsite when you reserve online. Maybe there was a picture of it when I reserved, but I didn't notice. First time camper mistake, I guess. Reserving online was simple, even though we checked in after 5, no issues. Park reps came by on a golf cart and verified or reservation. During business hours, they do a good job of monitoring and maintaining the park. I enjoyed our stay this time, notwithstanding the drunk guy that was still chopping wood at 1am in the most exaggerated, loudest way possible. The sunsets and rises made the sleepless night worth it. Not much more than twigs on the ground in this area, if you're wanting to make a fire, bringing firewood is necessary. We were not prepared for this, I went by what I knew as a kid gathering wood when camping, not possible at this site. Also, I'm guessing the reputation Thunderbird has as dirty Bird comes from when lake levels are low because the water is clear and sparkling. You can see the red clay bottom through the water in places. The best campsite restroom I've ever been in, although toilet paper did run out overnight. We will be back, exploring the other camping areas at the lake.
Nice area for camping, fishing and day use. Campsites and restrooms are clean and well maintained. We spent a week tent camping and really enjoyed ourselves. Too chilly for us to swim now but there are designated swim areas as well as a nice playground. Fishing was fantastic off the point! Large mouth bass were really biting. :-) March 2021
