So very glad we made it to Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Birthplace! Gene was the ultimate host, informative, well spoken and knowledgeable his stories took you back to the 1800’s especially when sitting in a rocker on the front pouch on a Sunny, late September day. The small museum is packed with items and Gene had a story for everyone one of them and more! From the very beginning at The Gates everything was clean and so detailed, you could see and feel how hard they are working to preserve the history of one of the greatest technical military officers that led by example! Such a humble beginning. Thanks to all who are working so hard to preserve our Southern history!
Be sure to call in advance and if you can get thru call the SCV National Museum in Columbia and get an appointment because often it is not open. One of my favorite visits to a historical site and we will be back, hopefully in June for the reunion!
Since the South's history is being stolen, visit this while you can. Very informative & beautiful place in the country to spend an afternoon. Lots of parking places, & family friendly.
If you are history buff, especially of the Civil war, stop off and tour the boyhood home of Nathan Bedford Forrest. Don’t follow the GPS. It will not take you to the correct entrance. Turn at the historical marker on Pyles Rd. The gates were closed on our first attempted visit but it was the lunch hour so I guess they were closed. So glad we returned the next day at 1pm. The tour guide was knowledgeable with details. There were many artifacts from the 1800’s. The cedar smell in the log cabin remains which amazed me. Take a few minutes to relax in the rockers on the front porch. The rocking, gentle breeze, and the view will take you back to the 1800’s.
Amazing homeplace, exquisitely preserved and maintained. Well educated, intelligent guides! Can't wait to visit again and again!
CORRECT address is 4435 Pyles Rd. Chapel Hill, TN. Please ignore any other addresses. Gene was a wonderful tour guide!
