We were in town for a quick road trip, had eaten brunch and decided to look for somewhere that was free. Dixon Gallery & Gardens was first to pop up in our search. It was perfect as we were only 3 miles away. What we got to see was fabulous. The artwork, amazing. The Gardens were beautiful. However, a lot of the museum was closed off. I would have given 5 stars had there been more to see.
I visited from out of town and thoroughly enjoyed the day there, The Dixson is very nice art gallery and the grounds are so beautiful! I saw a really great exhibit on Women's Sporting Fashion from 1800 - 1960. It was a unique and very well curated exhibit. There was also a local designer, professor with her formal dress designs on display, too. The impressionist, permanent collection, which was very nice, is mostly housed in an original old Memphis home. They also have a nice collection of Meissen China, a children's workshop area, a comfy bistro, and if course the beautiful grounds and cutting garden. Unbelievably, this is all free. They also have beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces for weddings and other events. I highly recommend it.
My favorite Memphis Museum of all time. Nestled in East Memphis, this former home was donated for all the city to enjoy and hosts a permanent collection of impressionist works and gorgeous gardens filled with statuary, trees, flowers and bushes. The annual tulip exhibit is breathtaking.
I was able to visit the Dixon Gallery and Gardens today while at a private event. Our group focused on the Black Artist in America and the paintings were beautiful yet amazing. I loved how the focus is set on the Great Depression up until the Civil Rights. We were told to expect two more exhibits (2023, 2025) that’ll provide more insight into Black America. I can’t wait to be able to view it! I did take a few photos but wanted to be respectful and live in the moment of these wonderful paintings. Being that admission is free through the rest of the year (possibly longer) I will definitely return to view more exhibits and the gardens!
