“I was assigned to this unir shortly after mu transfer from County to the intake unit in Dayton Plane State Jail who almost killed messing around w my seizure meds. Had to be sent out to the E.R. twice in 1o days. Glad to leave. Anyways when I finally arrived there after Carole Young they started to fix my medications and schedule me appointments with Neurologists at nearby UTMB Hospital (From CYMF its a day trip, from any other unit it takes about a week or so to get to the hospital, see the specialist, and get back) and also got xrays for my spine and had teeth surgically removed. The unit itself was a lot cleaner and smaller than what I had previously experienced. Also has single cublicles with outlets for fans, radios and hot pots. There is a section upstairs in the "main building" for terminal, seriously ill, or post op women and a few small pods for men that are on dialysis or for other reasons. Most men didn't stay long except the ones on dialysis and the terminally ill in "Extended Care" everybody housed in the main building had 24hr nursing care and they also did not wear uniforms, they wore hospital gowns. Us offenders laundered them and trust me when I say if you knew what was still in the pile od "medical laundry" after it went through the washer and dryer, you'd be disgusted. Mostly from nurses throwing gloves, wipes and catherters in the laundry bins. I was downstairs. 2 dorms for the sick bur functioning offenders, one dayroom, an education builsing with library and craft shop. GED was in the mornings, and the ONLY elective class I waited about 5 months to gwt into CHANGES after lunch. There was also a chapel/church ,recreation area with tables and sports equipment and a chow hall.... Dont forget the most important of them all commissary. Beyond A and B dorms which are within the fence, air conditioned and contain 104 or less "sick but functioning" offenders with diseases and illnesses varying from cancer paitents enduring chemo and radiation, all pregnant girls after 7 months and those considered high risk for whatever reason. Pregnant girls on methadone, dialysis patients, people with a history of heart problems, CHF, open heart surgery or pacemakers, late stage Hepatitis C and AIDS paitents and a few that would stay for only a few months to do the 3 month Hep C Cure "Harvoni" or had broken bones or minor sugeries. rare diseases and a few like me with "uncontrolled epilepsy". I worked within my restrictions so only six to nine hours a week. Beyond that fenced area was C dorm. The trustees. They had to strip naked, bend over, squat and cough anytime they crossed to the "unit" this means for work, clothes exchange, school, dayroom or rec yard. Even for church and meals!! And they worked A LOT to make up for those of us the majority of the unit that could not. It was still prison, but it wasnt bad.”
