“I am tremendously enthused about this little local convenience store. You can find newer gas pumps and a more modern coffee service at the nearby Stripes 7-Eleven convenience store, but you won’t find the kind of local charm you will find here. This is a place where last night I had a great conversation with three old locals – one of them a fabulous Kleberg County deputy sheriff– about the area and about where I should park my camper van overnight. That amazing, wiry, 50ish black deputy sheriff, Officer Wright, told me very sincerely that he stays up at night worrying about the proprietors of this little store - that there is so much crime rampant all through Texas now that he fears for their safety. Here was a law enforcement officer who truly wants to serve and protect everybody in his jurisdiction. One of the local guys recommended we should park by the fishing pier in Riviera – and that worked out great. I highly recommend a trip down there if you want to get feel of old-time local Texas. Our cashier last night was the very charming Dallas, who radiated sweet young female Texas charm – with also a dose of alternative modern thinking that made her extra delightful. Our cashier this morning had so much the same kind of energy as Dallas last night that she could’ve been her sister. When I asked her if she was close with Dallas, she said that she actually is her sister. I got a really fresh alternative feeling from Dakota today also - and asked her if she has any aspirations to move away from Riviera, where she was born and has always lived. She told me that the tiny little town of Riviera – which I thought was 600 people, but she thinks is less - is starting to feel a little too small for her. She is thinking about maybe moving to neighboring Corpus Christi. The political climate of the state of Texas has moved so dramatically to the right that I encouraged her to go someplace that would allow some different perspectives about the world. I suggested Galveston, which is so open to diversity and progressive ideas that they prooudly claim to not even really be a part of Texas. I took that line of thinking further and suggested she might at some point want to even break free from the united state of Texas– where the Republican party is even talking about seceding from the United States. I am freshly crazy about New Orleans - where people truly are citizens of the world and where people continue to move from all over the world, even if they are concerned about the rightward drift of the United States. A US Park Ranger in New Orleans said to me that his city is truly not even a southern city – and that seems accurate. Maybe that is partly because not only have the black population been well integrated in New Orleans – they actually are the majority. This will automatically weed out most racist folks who never would want to live in a mostly black city. For me, I adore New Orleans so much that it even has replaced my beloved hometown of Chicago as my favorite American city. If you are traveling down the Texas Gulf Coast from Corpus Christi to Brownsville and - like me - want to get closer to the water, you might choose to go a little off the beaten path and sample something different by going to the town of Riviera and the Baffin Bay Convenience Store. I hope you get to meet the wonderful Dakota or her sister Dallas. If you know New Orleans you might even want to put in a plug for it. Those girls deserve to see more of the world than Riviera – and even more of the world than Texas. #majojohnmadden #majoongrocerystores #majotalksbusiness #majoonpolicing #badassbrothersdotexas”
