I once went here as a kid for an overnight school field trip and remember this place very fondly. I hope to see it again someday. I remember the gazebo where we ate our meals and walking into the tall grass field where we set up little traps for mice/rats where there was a lesson on the different species. I remember I had ended up catching a pygmy mouse and it being the only one in the group. I remember sleeping in the house with the bunk beds and the deer head hanging on the wall.
I was maybe 11 at the time and am now 25. Forgot the name of this place till looking to move into the area from Houston.
As part of a graduate class in Ornithology I had the pleasure of spending three days here. I added 23 species of birds to my life list. Definitely a place I would go again.
Really a great place to see. Well worth the time.
One of my favorite places!! ❤
I stayed here for four days for the Conservation Leaders for Tomorrow program. The staff is awesome, the food was pretty good (I'm vegetarian which they weren't write prepared for, but they kept me fed and happy!), and Selma was great to talk to about their ongoing research and habitat management. They have a cute little museum of the natural history of the ranch, and a really excellent collection of bird and egg specimens, and a few reptiles. They also have some invertebrate specimens I didn't get to see. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in birds or other wildlife, native rangeland, ecology, and related research.
