I love history and this is real history. It helps make the revelutionary war period come to life.
What an amazing visit! The tour was an hour long. There’s a small museum with interesting facts and interactive stations. Worth the reading and great intro before tour. The tour guide (Laura H.) was amazing!!!! She knew so much, provided thorough answers that connected with other historical estates and period events that I’ve visited. The house was so interesting and a great architectural inspiration! And what was so pleasant was how large the property was, how we were able to ask so many questions on your as opposed to being shuttled through like other more popular sites (or Mt. Vernon), and it was more tranquil being in a more remote and undeveloped area of Alexandria. Only sad part was that the garden was being restored so it was difficult to get a river view. But I’d be so glad to return!!!
We did a tour on President's Day weekend. We loved learning all about the history of the family and the house. You are also free to walk the grounds afterwards and they offer free tours to active duty military which was a great bonus! Highly recommend if you are in the area and enjoy history!
The George Mason’s Gunston Hall is also referred to George Mason Plantation in other trail books. The grounds were really interesting to see. The house is only entered with a guided tour. The garden is behind the house and it visible from the main grounds and a tour inside the house is needed to see out into the garden. But you can see and look into the old laundry, dairy, and kitchen. You are able to stand inside the school house as well, which is cool. There are a couple of trails on the grounds. Throughout there are QR codes with audio and written descriptions of the trails as well as the various landmarks, which I thought gave it a nice touch.
FANTASTIC tour. Very knowledgeable interactive tour guide!!! Renovations are being done to the back of the house right now, but this did not take away from the tour at all! I have toured every major historical home in VA, and this was a shining star! Extremely impressed.
