The business of scalping the Greenbrier settlements fell to Cornstalk, the Shawnee chieftain, who, with his warriors, resided on the Scioto, in Ohio, some sixty miles from the Virginia border. Cornstalk did not strike the Greenbrier settlements when blood was on the May moon.
The Greenbrier settlements were again destroyed, and settlers in the Monongahela Valley and other areas suffered heavy losses. In an attempt to appease the Indians, the British government issued the Proclamation of 1763, which forbade settlements west of the crests of the Allegheny Mountains.
Greenbrier, taken from Botetourt, reached to the Ohio river, while Rockbridge, formed from both Augusta and Botetourt, has always had substantially its present dimensions. Finding they could not take the fort they killed all the stock of the garrison and then started for the Greenbrier settlements.
